Sandy Ridge Stallion
Sandy Ridge Stallion Station is a family-based business owned by Doug & Carol Schaffer of Bassano, Alberta, Canada. As high school sweethearts, we had no idea that our love for horses would go this far, certainly owning a stallion station was not even in the picture. We have four children; Vicki, Thane, Logan and Jordan who helped us develop what was once just a hobby to breeding approximately 175 mares per year.
Our goal at Sandy Ridge is to offer to the public a variety of top quality, good looking, world-class stallions with speed and/or cow genetics at affordable prices. These stallions must have strong, proven pedigrees, good conformation and dispositions, and if possible a proven performance record. By offering reasonable rates and treating our customers fairly Sandy Ridge has become one of the leading stallion stations in western Canada.
Doug has always felt that if he was going to feed a horse it may as well be a good one, and if that was the case, the horse had better pay his own way. This is still true today as Sandy Ridge Stallions have to pay their own way or they go. It’s as simple as that! Periodically, though the stallion roster is changed to offer new bloodlines. We currently own all of the stallions.
At age 16, Doug acquired his first stallion, a son of Leo which likely sparked the flame for more well bred stallions such as sons of Three Bars (TB), Vandy, Easy Jet, Doc Bar, Rocket Bar and such great stallions as Gallant Ghost, APHA Supreme Champion; Pay Stinger, AQHA Champion; Kaweah Sunrise si 96; Flying Effort si 94, a leading Alberta Race sire; Wranglers War Leo, World Champion Jr Working Cowhorse; Root Beer Doc, Hi Pt Jr Working Cow Horse and Bit Olympia si 96, a leading money earning Paint Horse. In later years we also stood Zans Diamond Dude, World Champion Heeling Horse and Zans Diamond Parr, Reserve World Show Superhorse, World Champion Heading Horse, earner of over 1000 AQHA pts in Heading, Heeling, Working Cow, Reining and Calf Roping and Miss N Command, earner of over $65,000 in cutting. Recently we stood Docs Paradise, the sire of winners of the $50,000 Calgary Stampede Barrel Racing for 4 years in a row-2004, 2003, 2002, 2001!! All of these stallions have made a positive impact on the Alberta Quarter Horse Industry. Interestingly, we have stood over 60 stallions!
Sandy Ridge Stallion Station services include the use of artificial insemination, shipping and receiving of cooled semen, custom foaling and year round boarding. All advertised stallion fees include chute fees and there is no extra charge for artificial insemination. Mare owners are given a choice of individual pens for wet or dry mares @ $7.50/day or large group paddock for dry mares @ $5/day.
Sandy Ridge Stallion Station runs approximately 25 select broodmares. We try to select mares that are sired by leading sires out of proven mares by leading sires that will complement our stallions. Our foals are sold at the farm and a few are selected for the CBHI Annual Sale held in the fall.
Sandy Ridge Stallion Station has become a ‘way of life’ for us. Doug offers a word of advice to any prospective stallion owner: “If you do not sincerely like people and are not willing to give up 5 to 6 months of your summer, then you won’t enjoy the stallion business”!
Sandy Ridge Stallion Station is located half way between Calgary and Medicine Hat on the Trans Canada Highway (#1) at Bassano, Alberta. Our station is built upon a ridge of sandy soil, hence our name.
We would like to thank everyone that has either bred mares to our stallions or purchased our foals. A special thank you to those people that have given our stallions’ offspring the opportunities needed to reach their full potential.
We invite you to call or email if you would like further information regarding any of our outstanding stallions.
